Skin Care 101

what harms my skin?
Sun. We all know this one. Tanning is damage too.  Wear SPF.  You'll still get some color, but more importantly, you'll save your skin. To learn more about your skin and the sun, read 'sun protection 101'.

Pollution. This includes cigarette smoke. Our words of advice, butt out, and avoid second hand smoke. Over time, pollution will damage healthy skin cells, and prevents your skin from looking and feeling its best.

what changes in my skin?
Diet. Not getting enough nutrients, or water? It will be written all over your face. Your skin is your largest organ, and requires love and nurturing from the inside and out.

Climate. Dry and cold climates make your skin thirsty. You'll need to hydrate (moisturize) more. Warmer and more humid climates means more sweat and oils. You are going to have to do some deeper cleansing and little less skin hydrating (moisturizing).

Stress affects us all differently, but it affects us all. Stress often shows in blemishes or skin flare-ups. Keeping your busy life balanced will help balance your skin.

Hormones regulate your skin's sebum (oil) production. pay attention to your skin - it might be telling you that something else is not 'quite right'.

The products you use change your skin. Beware of overly aggressive products like harsh cleansers and abrasive scrubs.  Our skin care trainers will customize a product recommendation for you, to ensure your skin gets what it needs to stay healthy and look its best.

what kind of skin do i have?
normal skin Not too oily, not too dry. Lucky you. Do I still need a facial and good skin care products? Absolutely. We will help you improve clarity, texture, and help with the occasional flare up, oily, or dry patch. You're ahead of the game: we want to take you to the podium.

combination skin Can't decide which side of the fence you sit on? You are not alone. Most have combination skin. This means your skin is likely oilier and sometimes breaks out in the t-zone (forehead, nose, chin), and a little drier, or normal elsewhere. Trust us to balance things out.

oily skin You know the story: pores are enlarged, extra oil, and if you use it, the make-up seems to slide around. You might even have a few photos where you can see the photographer's reflection, from your forehead! But, there's good news: you are less likely to have fine lines and wrinkles. And we will help get the oil under control.

dry skin Are you a flake? Your skin gets flaky, pores feel tight, and fine lines seem more obvious?  We want to help you hydrate and lubricate the skin to reduce those fine lines and wrinkles, and open up those constricted pores.

what about zits? Don't fret about these small annoyances. Pimples are the most common skin concern.  In short, you're not alone in this fight. Pimples are caused by skin producing oil (sebum), and the extra oil clogs pores. The result: zits.

so how do you get rid of zits? First, let's debunk some myths. Adult breakouts are not caused by poor hygiene or by eating french fries.  But diet, hygiene, stress, heat, hormones, and humidity can all aggravate it. Scrubbing as often as you can, will just dry out your skin. Dryness stimulates oil production, which causes... ta da...more pimples.

Exfoliating regularly will greatly reduce flare-ups because dead skin is removed before it clogs up your pores. Your skin care trainer has lots of experience with pimple treatment, and will be able to help treat flare-ups - careful extractions ensure that ruptures do not push the debris further into the skin. More importantly, if you're patient (it could take up to 4 weeks) we can put you on a program to reduce the occurrence of future flare-ups.

what about rosacea and couperose skin? Redness, and blotchiness around the nose, cheeks, forehead or chin is often confused for acne. But rosacea and couperose is skin damage caused by inflamed blood vessels. While we don't have a miraculous, one-visit cure, we will help you with products and a program to sooth the flare-ups, and stop the aggravation. If left untreated, rosacea can worsen and cause further skin damage.
